Literature Text

My son, he lives within the sea.
The water beckons him ahead.
His spirit dances away from me.

I watch the water hug his knee
as foam leaps around his tread.
My son, he lives within the sea.

Delighted squeals and cries of glee—
Only the tide knows what he said.
His spirit dances away from me.

His wet, blond hair is all I see.
Then ocean spray blankets his head.
My son, he lives within the sea.

The waves will not hear my plea;
she offers condolences instead.
His spirit dances away from me.

He drifts away, finally free.
I will not trust that he is dead.
My son, he lives within the sea;
His spirit dances away from me.
A Villanelle I wrote after being inspired by this: fav.me/d5aub0l
I dedicate this to my husband who keeps nagging me to write. Thanks, Sweetheart.
